Dear Akumal Council Members and our friends,
First, I would like to thank the membership for entrusting me with the responsibility of leading the Akumal Council as President. This past month we have had to put cleaning up after Hurricane Emily at the top of our priorities, but we are recovering nicely and will soon be able to shift back to our long term goals. There is much to do, but with patience and perseverance, we will continue to make progress.
Secondly, I would like to thank Laura for her contributions the last year and a half. Laura has always been ready, willing and able to serve Akumal wherever she is needed and we value her continuing presence and support.
We have many large tasks on our agenda. Of primary concern and importance to all of us is the development planned for the Akumal area. It has also become clear that we need to pursue either municipalization or privatization of Akumal in order to move forward with many of our projects. These are our two biggest issues and since many of our other efforts are directly affected by the outcome of these two, this needs to be our primary thrust.
The most important thing to remember is that without the Akumal Council, we have no say in what goes on around us. We live in an area that is growing faster than is healthy, and if we don't stay on top of it, we will be swallowed by the massive growth. The Council has already accomplished much but we still have a long way go and we need the continuing financial support of the community in order to do so.
Lastly, I would like to thank our board for all their hard work and support. The board is made up of a small group of Akumal residents who generously give of their time and energy in order to address the concerns of all of us. We are all people who have our own lives with jobs and interests that need our attention, but we still make protecting and improving Akumal a priority. We know that people who don't live here are not able to serve on a day to day basis, but you can still lend your support by becoming a member of the Council.
Sincerely,
Gonzalo Arcila
