Akumal Mexico—Place of the Turtle
Akumal
faces the Caribbean Sea on the east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula in
the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico, roughly 100 kilometers (60 miles)
south of Cancun Mexico. Akumal is the oldest resort town on the
Caribbean coast of Mexico and began as a coconut plantation in the
1950s. The town was founded by Pablo Bush Romero in the 1960's as a
Scuba divers' paradise and has since grown to become a beloved vacation
town of travelers from all over the globe.
