As a committee-based organization, we are focusing our efforts on objectives developed by the committees and approved by the membership. Our objectives are established in response to the challenges facing our community.

The Executive Committee:

  1. Support the operation of the Akumal Council and the committees
  2. Provide a liason to the governemntal agencies to see that the needs of Akumal have a voice
  3. Work to get Akumal Regularized in a way that reflects the desires of Akumal

  1. To unite the efforts between the Pueblo and the Beach Community of Akumal to attain benefits from both Government and the Private sector for the good of all Akumal.
  2. Support important projects for the Pueblo through the creation of a special fund within the Council, called the United Akumal Fund.
  3. To improve communication between the Pueblo and the Beach community through mutual support and dialogue.

  1. To establish a good working relationship and communication with the local security and public safety authorities thus ensuring the best possible support for the safety of Akumal.
  2. To coordinate security efforts between private and public security.

Environmental Committee:
Initiatives
WATER
Goal – Ensure that no waste water reaches the aquifer or reef in Akumal One of the most important project for Akumal, a waste water treatment system must be established.
  1. Identify contamination sources in Akumal. Review wetlands and septic tanks; make sure septic and wetlands are working properly.
  2. Connect Pueblo – Work with CAPA and Pueblo to get all houses connected to system. Use micro-credit fund being set up.
  3. Connect North Akumal – determine best treatment system for North Akumal; work with CAPA to install system. Determine location for treatment system.
  4. Test water regularly.
SOLID WASTE
Goal – Akumal separating and recycling all recyclable materials, reducing load to area landfill.
  1. Tulum Waste Management – work with Municipal government to ensure regular pick-up of non-recyclable waste.
  2. Clean up campaign – begin campaign to get all property owners to clean up the mangrove / jungle area across from their properties, and no longer throw debris there.
  3. Recycling System – re-establish collection system for all of Akumal. Schools in Pueblo as collection centers. CEA as Akumal collection center for Tulum Municipality. Inform all property staff of system; determine specific municipal waste (non-recyclable materials) sites in Akumal. Buy and locate adequate bins for sites throughout Akumal. Guarantee regular pick-up from sites.
  4. Quarry Composting project – continue lobbying with State government for site; determine funding for project; (project definition being finished now); finalize preliminary study for quarry project; present to SEDUMA and IPAE; establish implementation team; obtain funding; initiate project
MARINE PROTECTION
Goal – Protect and restore coastal marine ecosystem in Akumal, from Yal Ku to Bahia Principe
  1. Bay Management Plan (POBAk) – Implement management plan to control and manage tourism activities in the bays of Akumal. Guidelines for tour operators. Agreements with dive shops and local independent tour operators. Tourism education through CEA.
  2. Yal Ku – Finish the capacity study and operators rules for Yal Ku. Begin operation after general meeting with operators.
  3. Certification – certify Akumal beach in national Clean Beaches Certification Program. Hire lifeguard for Akumal Beach. Establish recycling bins on properties. Ensure water quality in bay.
  4. Turtle Refuge – establish Sea Turtle Refuge and legal instrument for turtle protection in Akumal’s Bays. Initial solicitation document has been delivered. Finalize carrying capacity study and operation program. Letters of local support.
LONG-TERM PROJECTS
JUNGLE (Akumal Ecological Reserve)*
Goal – Protect local flora and fauna through the establishment of the Akumal Reserve in area between federal highway and beach.
  1. Finalize draft document. Obtain permission / negotiation with IPAE. Obtain letters of support. Obtain support from governor.
  2. Document has been presented for review in SEDUMA and IPAE technical offices. Legal justification is being written now. Formal solicitation has been presented to state governor.

AKUMAL DEVELOPMENT PLAN (25 year plan)
Goal – Ensure ecosystem health in Akumal as Development Plan becomes implemented. Establish local committee as determined by PDU document.
  1. Define priorities for Akumal
  2. Determine priority sustainable practices for development.
  3. Work with government agencies throughout growth process.
ECOLOGIAL AKUMAL (PROFEPA PROGRAMA)
Goal – Manage Akumal as a sustainable destination. Define Ecological Objectives & Strategy
  • Determine and establish official agreement with PROFEPA to implement strategy.

    Initiatives
    We have initiated a "security golf cart" for North Akumal during the hours that houses are potentially most vulnerabe. Manned by a private security company, the cart provides a set of eyes to look for unusual or suspicious activities.

    For Monday through Saturday, the cart operates during the dinner hours (5PM - 9PM). On Sunday, the cart operates from 9AM to 9PM.
