Progress on road repair and the parking lot area
In the following the 2005 hurricane season, after hurricanes Emily (July) and Wilma (October) pummeled our precious Akumal, the Akumal Council has been applying itself to improve town; first with the 2005 hurricane fund, financed by some of the property and business owners in Akumal, and then with a project to landscape the public parking lot area; paint, clean and landscape the Fidecaribe building, and renovate the current police caseta. We have made major progress in all areas. Here is our update.
  Hurricane fund
More than 25,000 dollars US were raised to bring in front-end loaders to clear the road and dump trucks to haul away the debris. Some money remains in this fund and is designated for future roadwork and bad weather events.
A very encouraging development occurred recently
Following an Akumal Council meeting with the Mayor of Solidaridad, Carlos Joaquin Gonzalez, the Akumal Council secured municipal assistance to patch our road from central Akumal to Yal-ku lagoon. For the moment the road is pot-hole (waco) free but of course this is an ongoing process. We will do our best to get the jet-patcher periodically to make repairs.
 The public parking lot planter
 The old "Fidecaribe building"

Funded by private donations the planter and building has been totally landscaped and the building repainted. Donations were made by Kay and Gary Walten, Diane and Denny Mahan, Salvatore, Jamie Cost and Laura Bush & Dave Wolfe. The "Fidecaribe building" is intended to be the future location for the municipal police.

Akumal and municipal logos have now been painted on the building and it is now being refered to as the Akumal Tourism Center.
  The Police Caseta and road
Two more improvements are worthy to report here. First, the Police Caseta at the begining of the North Akumal road has been given a new Police sign, a fresh layer of gravel, and the building has been somewhat renovated and totally repainted. This, thanks a combined effort of Din Richardson and from the Akumal Council.
Another stride forward is Jamie Cost's decision to redo his section of public road in front of La Buena Vida and Vista del Mar hotel with paver bricks (adocreto). This is a long stretch of road and so constitutes a significant improvement. This area was totally washed out by hurricane Wilma. The pavers are going in now, April 2006, and it looks great.
